Darnbrough & Co upgrades to the integrated Digita Professional Suite to achieve greater efficiency

02 December 2013

North Yorkshire firm, Darnbrough & Co, has selected the Digita Professional Suite from Thomson Reuters to provide better collaboration and achieve greater efficiencies. One of the key criteria in the software selection process was integration with ‘all details in one place so that tax returns can be produced easily’, according to partner John Darnbrough.

The practice had been a loyal customer of another practice software company for the last 20 years but, when faced with increasing costs and deteriorating customer support, the decision was taken to look for a replacement. John Darnbrough explains:

"It was a big step to take but we were at the stage where costs were spiralling and the quality of support had fallen – while the company was only interested in selling us more products."

The final straw came in April when the annual personal tax update failed to produce the most basic of tax liability calculations. On reporting the problem, John was surprised when he was told that the supplier was already aware of the fault.

"I was disappointed that we were not able to do our job properly and annoyed that they suggested a manual override as a quick fix."

John researched potential systems online and read user reviews before inviting a shortlist of three to demonstrate their software.

"The staff were involved all the way through the selection process and all agreed that the Digita solution stood out as having the greatest capabilities."

The firm found the inclusion of Digita Practice Management within the suite very persuasive and the set of fully automated tools with staff time sheets, user, client and staff dashboards, job management and tracking allow staff to access up-to-date and accurate client information at all times.

The Digita Professional Suite holds all client and contact details (name, address, telephone numbers, email addresses etc.) in a central database. Because information is only entered once, this saves the practice time and reduces the risk of using incorrect data.

With the help of a specialist Digita data migration team, tax data, including names and reference numbers, has been carried across to the new system. The firm decided to enter trial balances themselves, despite this data migration being part of the service. John says:

"This was just as easy and helped us to get used to the way the software works."

The firm is happy with their decision to partner with Thomson Reuters.

"The software is easy to use and the support lines have been good when we have needed help. There is no waiting for 20 minutes as with our previous supplier,"
John adds.
"We have gained through the change as we now have far more functionality."

John has sound advice for other practices considering a change.

"Changing software is not an easy step to take and there is a lot of work to do but I don’t regret it for a minute. Our former software supplier thought they were invincible and they are not."
