On Wednesday, George Osborne announced his first March budget since the Conservatives won a majority in 2015.

The new sugar tax and ISAs for under 40’s aside, this budget appeared quite light compared to the “death of tax returns” and the major dividend taxation changes, announced in the two previous budgets.

CATO – Changing the landscape for Corporation Tax return filing

Ever since the introduction of iXBRL and mandatory Corporation Tax return filing, HMRC has provided a free, PDF based, product that could be used for the most basic situations.  The intention for this product was that it would be used by unrepresented companies to prepare their own tax returns.  It was never intended to be used by agents but due to the way that it worked, a number of agents used it on a regular, or exclusive, basis for preparing client filings.  Over the last year, 15% of CT600 returns were made using the HMRC product.

Digitizing Self Assessment

HMRC is moving to paperless self assessment (Digital SA) and, as part of the increase in electronic communication; taxpayer information will be shared with software providers. This ultimately means that in the future, your client information held by HMRC will be accessed through Digita software, without the need for you to log into the HMRC website. more »

The Top 5 Corporation Tax Filing Failures

HMRC statistics for the last tax year show that Digita Corporation Tax users had an average first time tax filing success rate of 95% and, once all of the failures were submitted successfully again, this increased to over 99%. more »
