IT tips – Optimising your PC/Server

As the tax filing deadline has passed, now is a good time to take a look at your server or standalone PC to see if your Digita software is running as smoothly as possible.

computer screen - optimise efficiency

Firstly, it would be a good idea to re-index your Digita databases. This organises your client data sequentially so that it can load a little faster. You can re-index the databases via the Digita Database Backup Tool. Select the ‘Products’ tab along the top, choose the Digita database you want to re-index and click ‘Re-Index’.

Limited space on the drive that your Digita databases reside can also cause slow overall performance. Have a check regularly to make sure this doesn’t get too low. There could be old Digita backups taking up space in your SQL default BACKUP folder.

Keep an eye on your system resources. Depending on what you are doing with your system you could always add more RAM. This could help a standalone PC run more efficiently, especially if you use this for multiple applications. Servers like Small Business Server are designed to work at high memory levels. It is best to consult your IT technician or Digita IT Support for further information.

Schedule backups

Make sure you schedule backups for the evening. Sometimes we see 3rd party backup software running during the day, and this can adversely effect your system’s performance when you are trying to work.  As always, though, take Digita backups regularly. Don’t forget you can also schedule backups with our backup tool.  Search the Digita knowledge base for for further information.

Anti-virus products often carry out automated scheduled scans weekly. These can often occur during the day and, therefore, adversely effect your system’s performance.  It would be best to check your anti-virus settings to ensure it runs at a time when the system is not in use.

Hopefully, this information can help you to work more efficiently in 2016!
